Hanv saiba poltodi vetam…

The Dekhṇi is a semi-classical Goan (Indian) dance form. Though its origins appear to be a little unclear, the fact remains that the dance form gained acclaim following the release of ‘Hanv Saiba Poltodi Vetam’ by Carlos Eugenio Ferreira (1860–1926) first published in Paris in 1895 and then in Goa in 1926. It is undoubtedly one of the most famous of the Dekhni songs and became popular all over India when the song was adapted by Raj Kapoor as ‘Na mangoon sona chandi’ in his Hindi movie Bobby.

Its history and origins notwithstanding, it is a dance that is synonymous with Goan culture and is performed widely as part of the repertoire of Goan folk arts. Unfortunately, and I am sure many who are familiar with Goan dance forms and the Dekhni in particular, will agree, that we are seeing a degeneration in the dance performances and its music too which is being increasingly digitalized – the ‘ghumat’ which lends its percussion to the music, is usually missing.

The young members of the Abu Dhabi Goans presented the Dekhni, to the traditional ‘Hanv Saiba Poltodi Vetam’ at the World Goa Day – a spectacular performance using eight dancers and the ‘taria’ – the boatman.

The story that is depicted in this song is about temple dancers who want to go for Damu’s wedding, but find that the boatman is not willing to ferry them across the river as it is approaching nightfall and the water is a little turbulent due to the strong winds.

As their incessant pleading does not convince the boatman, the girls try to buy their way offering the boatman their jewelry – but he does not budge. And they begin to dance…
